Abby Faith Cheeseman, a sophomore All-American and Tennessee state champion at Webb School in Bell Buckle, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the invitational girls 3,200-meter race April 8 at the 55th Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High in California. Cheeseman, who is making her Arcadia debut, is following her siblings Claire and Carter, who both competed at the meet in 2017, with Carter running 8:54.06 in the boys invitational 3,200 in 2018. Cheeseman also revisits earning All-America honors by finish fourth Dec. 3 in 17:13.4 on the 5-kilometer course at Balboa Park's Morley Field in San Diego at the Champs Sports Cross Country National Championships, and making her first trip to California since that competition. She reflects on her experiences March 10-12 at New Balance Nationals Indoor at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, placing 10th in the 2-mile final in 10:15.45 and securing 20th in the mile championship in 4:51.58. Cheeseman also speak about winning the Tennessee indoor 2-mile state title Feb. 19 in 10:14.90. She expresses gratitude for the opportunity to compete against several cross country and indoor All-Americans in the invitational 3,200, including Nike Cross Nationals winner Irene Riggs of Morgantown High in West Virginia and runner-up Brooke Wilson of Valor Christian High in Colorado, along with Champs Sports fifth-place finisher Ciara O'Shea of Madison Central High in Kentucky. Cheeseman speaks about learning to find comfort and familiarity racing in larger fields during the past year and how much she has improved as a result of the strong competition she has raced. She also speaks about trusting her faith while recovering from injury during the past year, which forced her to miss racing at Arcadia last season. Cheeseman explains how meaningful it would be to become only the third Tennessee prep female athlete to run under 10:10 in the 3,200, joining sub-10 performers Jenna Hutchins of Science Hill High and Rebecca Story of Christian Academy of Knoxville. She also looks ahead to postseason races, and shares how inspiring the overall athletic culture is at Webb School.
